What happened to Evite?

I was messing around in Facebook the other day and it dawned on me that virtually every Facebook member has probably been invited to a party through Evite. What happened to Evite? With 15 million registered users, and probably ten times that number of folks who have received an invite but never registered, could Evite have become Facebook before Facebook? Sure seems that way to me.

I did a little digging, and turns out Evite is held by Barry Diller’s holding company of Match.com, Ask.com and Citysearch.com fame. Well, quasi-fame. All reasonably good dot-com plays, but each is slightly less innovative and thus slightly less relevant than their competition.

Now there’s Socializr, which offers a much better user experience than Evite. But my prediction? Someone out there will soon develop a quality online invitation application for Facebook. So be on the lookout for an Evite funeral Evite.
